It’s simple to compile a list of the best RPG games available on the Xbox platform; the true difficulty lies in deciding which ones to put first on your own personal enjoyment list. To assist you in making a decision, we’ll go into great detail about each of these best role-playing games and why playing them is so amazing. Some of these RPGs are so fantastic that they are included in our lists of the new Xbox games overall and Xbox Series X games. Because there are so many fantastic new RPGs being released for Xbox, we’ll be adding new titles to this guide frequently, so be sure to come back often.

1. Elden Ring

A Souls-like is always a good choice, and Elden Ring is the master of the style. FromSoftware’s inventive approach to the genre it established with games like Dark Souls has won over fans all over the world, and the game is regarded as one of the greatest of this generation.

This award-winning role-playing game is not to be missed, offering hundreds of potential builds, an expansive open world to explore, and a ton of Elden Ring bosses to defeat. Although the term is frequently used in the gaming community, this is a true must-play.

You can see why we gave the Elden Ring a perfect ten by reading our review, if you’re still not convinced. Additionally, now is the ideal moment to start playing the game before the Elden Ring DLC is released.

Top Xbox role-playing games: A player in Disco Elysium crosses a bridge.

2. Disco Elysium Final Cut

Although the world is terribly twisted up, nasty, and gloomy, it has the capacity to be so much more. Fortunately, the figure you portray in Disco Elysium can also be described as anything from a pointless waste of flesh to an actual shining example of virtue and justice.

A text-heavy role-playing game, Disco Elysium will make you laugh, cringe, and cry as the plot develops. It’s a beautiful game, and the Final Cut version makes it even better. There are other better options on this list if you’re looking for a steady, throbbing action. But if you enjoy telling stories and having control over them, this role-playing game is for you.

Top Xbox role-playing games: In Yakuza Like a Dragon, a player takes hold of a bottle while donning a hood and fingerless gloves.

3. Yakuza Like a Dragon

Although the Yakuza series has been around for a while—the first game was released in 2005—Like a Dragon represents a new and improved Yakuza. Leaving behind the previous protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga now plays the major part and, following his release from prison, aspires to become the “hero.”

It’s also the first game in the series to concentrate on turn-based combat rather than the action gameplay found in the earlier installments. Fans of the Yakuza series will need to adjust to this change, but Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio does a fantastic job of creating a compelling story that is worth following along with an amazing combat system.

It might not be the best idea to start with Like a Dragon if you want to go through all of the Yakuza series’ spin-offs. But if you don’t mind beginning with a new Yakuza turning point, this entry is a terrific way to get into the series.

One player wielding a blazing greatsword in Tales of Arise is one of the best Xbox role-playing games.

4. Tales of Arise

In Tales of Arise, we meet an amnesiac slave, an enigmatic woman who harms everyone in her path, and the various manifestations of oppression.

It’s an amazing action role-playing game with a diverse cast of characters, each with their own goals and fighting style, who come together to attempt and overcome the problems that seem insurmountable at first. You may swap between multiple characters during fight because to its energetic combat, which adds a great strategic element.

Oh, and it’s really beautiful; among the entries on this list with the most striking visuals is Tales of Arise. Finally, a fantastic expansion for the game named Beyond the Dawn has been made available; it takes place a year after the original story’s events.

Xbox role-playing games: In Dragon Quest Elusive, two players battle a dragon.

5. Dragon Quest XI S Echoes of an Elusive Age

For those seeking the finest role-playing games, Dragon Quest XI may sound scary, but it’s really one of the series’ most approachable titles for beginners, and it was developed with a Western audience in mind.

In Dragon Quest XI, you take on the role of a baby who, after an army of monsters decides to assault the kingdom of Dundrasil, manages to live. Dragon Quest XI plays like the rest of the series, with turn-based fighting and world exploration. However, you can go back to the series’ origins by switching between 2D and 3D outside of battle.

Dragon Quest XI was a huge hit, but the series remains mostly unchanged from this entry, so if you like this game, you’ll probably enjoy the others as well.

Top Xbox role-playing games: Divinity Original Sin 2 features five characters: a sorcerer, a warrior, an elf, a lizard, and an admiral.

6. Divinity Original Sin 2

Ever wished you could be a fire-spitting lizard with a keen sense of geomancy and a passion for finer things in life? Since nobody hasn’t, we’re going to assume that the answer is yes.

With an endless amount of content, greater replayability than most roguelikes, and an overwhelming amount of fire, Divinity Original Sin 2 is an immersive simulation masquerading as a role-playing game. It can also be played cooperatively, which adds to its enjoyment.

Larian Studios completed Divinity Original Sin 2 as their final project before beginning work on Baldur’s Gate 3, which has since received widespread praise from critics as one of the greatest role-playing games ever created. Divinity is great if you played Baldur’s Gate 3 first.

Xbox role-playing games: In The Witcher 3, Geralt throws a sack of coins into the air.

8. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

You get to battle, chat, and sleep your way through a plot that will have you doubting your own morals all the time and feeling generally depressed. Geralt, albeit not the Henry Cavill version, plays the lead role. Well, you will look good while doing it, at least.

For those who enjoy action-packed role-playing games, The Witcher 3 may not have the best fighting. But what it excels at is telling a story that lingers with you long after you’ve finished it, and some of the DLCs are among the greatest game expansions ever created.

You can fully utilize the power of the Xbox Series X|S while exploring the expansive open world of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which is also available officially on next-generation systems. We believe that The Witcher 3 is the best game ever made by developer CD Projekt Red, who is among the best in the industry at creating grand, epic role-playing games.

Top Xbox role-playing games: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Eivor wearing an eye patch

9. Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla

Before Origins, the Assassin’s Creed series consisted of action stealth games, but it has since developed into a massively multiplayer online role-playing game franchise.

In this entry, you assume control of Eivor, a Viking who obtains what they require by using brute force. As you travel with them across countries and kingdoms, you’ll create new rivalries and friendships and eradicate corruption along the way. Throwing axes at adversaries will be a lot of fun, provided that the thought of devoting 120 hours to a game does not concern you.

The fact that we rate the venerable series so highly on our list of the best Assassin’s Creed games says it all considering how many games have been released in it throughout the years. And if you do decide to stick with the 100+ hour main game, there are a ton of expansion packs available for Valhalla.

Top Xbox role-playing games: Diablo IV

10. Diablo 4

One of the most awaited sequels ever is Diablo 4, and Blizzard’s insanely popular series never lets up with its most recent release.

For those not familiar with the genre, Diablo is mostly recognized as an isometric camera looter action role-playing game. Even if Diablo 4’s storyline is undoubtedly the strongest in the series, what keeps the gameplay loop enjoyable after endless hours of play is the action and getting the best gear for your class.

As you set out to defeat Lilith, Queen of the Succubi, you’ll have to slay and plunder your way past legions of vile creatures strewn around Sanctuary. Our Diablo 4 walkthrough is the ideal ally in your battle against the legions of hell, should you decide to take the risk.

Best RPG on the Xbox: Assassin’s Creed Mirage

11. Assassin’s Creed Mirage

No, it’s not an illusion; what you’re seeing is a different Assassin’s Creed game. According to our resident series expert Kyle Wilson, Assassin’s Creed Mirage is “everything you could want from an Assassin’s Creed game and truly satisfying from start to finish.” Ubisoft has been on a bit of a hot streak lately. See our review of Assassin’s Creed Mirage for more details.

This time, the main attraction is Basim Ibn Ishaq, as Ubi promises an exciting parkour-filled journey through the streets of Baghdad in the ninth century, ten years before to the events of Valhalla. Enjoy a “compact, engaging story driven by captivating characters” as Basim matures and gradually transforms into the Valhalla character we know and love.

When tackling best Assassin’s Creed Mirage tool like Left Behind, A Challenge, or Surrender, make sure you select the appropriate tool for the job.

12. Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition

Final Fantasy XV remains one of the best RPGs on Xbox and among the best in the series, even if PlayStation seems to be acquiring all of the Final Fantasy titles as exclusives these days, with both the 16th mainline entry and the FF7 Remake series being platform exclusives.

The narrative follows Noctis and his companions as they travel across the Eos planet to the location of Noctis’ upcoming wedding. Unfortunately, things take a sharp turn for the worst when Niflheim soldiers assassinate Noctis’s father, the monarch of the Kingdom of Lucis. The mystery further deepens from there, and although the main story is a fun show, one of the main highlights is the bond of brotherhood that Noctis and his pals share.

Additionally, Final Fantasy XV is one of the only games in the series to employ real-time fighting in place of the turn-based combat found in earlier titles. It’s still thrilling, though, and planning with your group gives the otherwise straightforward hack-and-slash gameplay a much-needed depth boost.

All of the previously released DLC for the game is included in the Royal Edition, along with a brand-new DLC that is centered around the antagonist. Technical enhancements are also included.
